History

Within 1903 the British War Department purchased certain portions of the farms Grootfontein, Leeufontein, Bultfontein & De Poort - by having the concerted front yard of 10 847 hectare - for the purpose of a military camp & expert training videos centre for British troops. These portions combined, called Grootfontein, adjoin a commonage of Middelburg, Eastern Cape Province.

Whenever a Union of South Africa was established around 1910 a domestic Grootfontein, together sustaining occasionally military buildings & more devices, was purchased from either a British Government for an total of R98 000 & converted into an agrarian school & experimental station.
